The hotspringsurvey.org study recruited n=124 participants who identified as having PTSD, with n=50 PTSD sufferers (40%) experiencing the combined complexities of PTSD, depression, anxiety, stress and insomnia. This presentation explores the responses of those with PTSD and the relationship between hot springs bathing (balneotherapy), trauma, its mental health comorbidities and sleep quality. Various other studies into current PTSD recovery treatment are explored within the presentation. The hotspringsurvey.org participants who reported that balneotherapy provided significant relief of their PTSD, also reported a strong positive effect on their comorbidities. Three quarters of participants reported better sleep quality from balneotherapy. For those with PTSD there was significant benefit in terms of stress reduction, particularly for those with severe or very severe PTSD. Stress management is an important psychological intervention in treatment of PTSD and the hotspringsurvey.org study identifies BT as a potentially useful complementary therapy for PTSD and a fruitful area for future research.
